No More Secrets

I feel almost like I am admitting I've been cheating. It's not so bad, of course. But I have kind of been cheating on you, you dear SWOONOVERIT readers. You see, I have been - for a long long time now - building up a blog that is on one hand entirely different from this one here. But on the other, it is entirely the same.

My "big announcement" has recently been unleashed to the world: I have been pursuing photography, rather than wedding planning, for quite some time now. But do not misunderstand here: my love for details, admiration of crafty DIY projects, and obsession with stories of love has not changed. Not one bit. In fact, I plan to take everything that I have going here and continue it at my new blog. The change? A new design, lots more photos (of course!), and - obviously - a new URL.

So what am I getting at here? I'm trying to tell you that there is a whole new big bad SWOONOVERIT out there and you're going to be missing out if you don't head on over and check it out. I promise it's the same me. Just way, way cooler. I will not be deleting this blog for the sake of keeping it on hand for the archival of old posts. But, there will be no more updates here. This shouldn't be sad, of course, because, well, let's just say this will be a major upgrade.

Soft, Sweet, Bridal Shower

Was recently sent these bridal shower photos from DeAnna Masella and loved the soft, sweet, vintage-y-ness of them all. What a lucky bride to have someone so meticulously capturing the details of even her bridal shower! I am a total sucker for details, so when I saw how many she had capturing the arrangements, food, and decor - I simply knew you'd love it as much as I did.

Laura Beth and Dillon were married on June 18th. Cannot wait to see what their wedding looked like!

Tomorrow is the day.

I've talked about it before. Probably many times before. But, my brother and future sister-in-law are getting married.... tomorrow. I'm in like utter disbelief. It truly feels like just yesterday they got engaged. But, watching their wedding planning process has been so inspiring. I've been so lucky to be involved in their invitations, envelopes, engagement session and more.

But, tomorrow is the day. Finally. To two of the sweetest, happiest, most fun couples I know - I wish you a lifetime of love and laughter. I am so excited to be a part of your day in so many ways. I cannot wait to see you together as a wonderful husband and wife team, and to one day meet your gorgeous babies (don't deny it: they're coming). I love you guys more than I could express.

To everyone else, wish me luck this weekend and hope I don't trip down the aisle. I'll be a little MIA at the beginning of next week as I'll still be vacationing in Florida with my family for the event, but I'll be sure to report back later in the week with lots of details!

The Perfect Wedding Magazine: Real Simple Weddings 2010

So, Real Simple sent me this magazine over a while ago to review and, to be completely honest, it entirely slipped my mind. When it arrived in the mail, I read it and poured over its pages from cover to cover for, well, hours. But then I entirely forgot to tell you all just what I thought.

You see, I reviewed Real Simple Weddings 2009 last year, and I have to admit, my love of their clean design, thorough advice, and stunning pages still hasn't changed. Not one bit.

This year, Real Simple Weddings 2010 is simply chock full of beautiful inspiration and tons of wonderful advice.

For each section, there is a list of common questions and wonderfully written advice on how to deal with these issues.

My absolute favorite - the glossaries of terms. Below is one such example of the different dress types. Because, let's be honest here, most people only get married once. And, unless you are into fashion design, you likely don't know all the differences between a trumpet style and mermaid style. And, why should you?

This one is really key for me. When I was a bride, I realized most surprisingly that I actually knew little to nothing about flowers except which ones "looked pretty." Here's some help for those like me!

And let's not forget the "real weddings" displayed throughout the magazine. Tasteful. Simple. Beautiful.

And, here's what I mentioned last year and I'm so glad they stuck by. This is what makes Real Simple Weddings so different from the other wedding magazines. The entire thing is sponsored by one company - in this case, Target's Club Wedd. Why does this matter? Because most magazines are this same size and more than half of it is ads. Not so with Real Simple. Target's Club Wedd is featured on the back and only once or twice inside. So tasteful you almost don't realize there is any advertising at all.

So, if you haven't gotten the gist yet, I'd recommend Real Simple Weddings over and over again to any bride. Have you seen the issue? What did you think? Were you as impressed as I was?

Feature: Mismikado's Wedding Invitations

I have been wanting to post these for some time but hadn't gotten the chance to get some good photos of them. A long, long time ago, I donated some of my calligraphy to a contest. Lucky for me, the winner ended up being the fabulous Sebrina Schultz of Mismikado's Journey Down the Aisle. I learned over time that she had the crafty bug in her, but had no idea just how talented she was until I got these babies in the mail. Check it:

Stunning no? I love that she spared no detail. The lace on the front. The fabulous font design work, it's no wonder that Sebrina went on to open her brand spanking new business, Mismikado Creations. The Traditional in Non-Traditional

One of my favorite things is when brides and grooms do something totally unexpected at their wedding. Maybe it's not as extreme as a first dance to the Hokey Pokey. But even something totally traditional with a unique spin on it.

A few weeks ago, I was lucky enough to attend a beautiful wedding where the bride and groom did just that. We've all heard of the traditional receiving line. And, from a wedding planner's perspective, they're a pain. They take forever. They're hard to predict time-wise. They usually eat into the reception time. And so much more. But this wedding, you see, didn't have just any old receiving line.

After photos, the bride and groom welcomed everyone at the cocktail hour and began the receiving line there. After hugging and welcoming each guest, the guest would proceed into the reception where the buffet was waiting for them.

Why was this so brilliant? Because enough time elapsed between each guest speaking with the bride and groom that there was never a line for the buffet. Guests just grabbed a plate and were able to walk right up! Brilliant? I think so.

So, how did you or are you going to mix it up? Considering a receiving line? I recommend this!

Milk and Cookies

I have to admit, the idea has been around for a while. But, the first time I heard of it I think I gasped aloud at its brilliance: milk and cookies.

Maybe you plan on dancing so much you need a midnight snack. Maybe you just aren't into the cake thing (in which case, don't tell me - I'm obsessed!). Or maybe you just want to send your guests on their way with a little treat.

Whatever the case, I'm nearly obsessed with the milk and cookies idea.

You could have cute little shotglasses of milk.

A Sad Goodbye, A Happy Hello

This is an announcement that I should have made a long time ago. But, somehow, for some reason, I just couldn't do it. Perhaps I couldn't bring myself to face the reality of it. Or I didn't want to disappoint. But, a while ago I began re-routing my calligraphy shop to this very blog. Why, you ask?

Well, I have many other things to be excited about. And with a big move and a lot of other projects to tend to, calligraphy was never the light of my life. Don't get me wrong - I loved it. But mostly, I loved it because I loved my clients - not the work. Sometime in January I spent one weekend writing over three hundred envelopes and designing two maps, and, quite literally, I lost feeling in the tip of my thumb. Unfortunately, I still do not have it completely back today - though it has gotten better. Thankfully, this has not affected my ability to write in any way. But it is frustrating and certainly weighed on this decision.

To my current clients: please rest assured. I will still be completing ALL OF THE ORDERS that I have already booked. This announcement is only being made so interested clients know that I am no longer accepting orders. Your already booked orders will still be processed and delivered on schedule and just as planned!

For those that were interested in my work, I would love to refer you to the ever-fabulous Penned & Pretty.

Jessica, owner and calligrapher, opened her doors just before I did last year and has a fabulous style and impeccable taste. Check out her beautiful blog and fall in love with her work. You won't be disappointed.

But, please don't feel sorry about this decision. I assure you - it was made with much excitement and enthusiasm for what is to come. It will be good. I promise. Oh yes, and rest assured that the SWOONOVERIT blog isn't going anywhere. Yet.

Big Announcement: Part I of III

Big announcement, you ask? Part I of III? Crazy, I know. I have three big announcements. And, assuming all goes as planned, will be making them one at a time over the next three weeks. One of them involves the mystery clues I've set along the way. But, I'm saving that one for later, my friends.

Today I bring to you a project that I've been working on with the lovely Meghan Magritz, also known as The City Bride. Over the past six weeks or so, we've sweated, cried, laughed, and obsessed over a concept that we believe will make a difference. We want to see wedding professionals across the country come together to help brides and grooms create the wedding of their dreams. We want to pull these wedding professional geniuses out of the crowd and deliver all their tips and advice in one spot. One blog for every city. So a New York City bride can read one spot to find all her favorite vendors inspiration, real work, tips, and advice. We bring you: The Wedding Boutique.

Engagement Love: A Day in the Park

Sure, it is no theme shoot. But, when Jeff Wallace sent over these gorgeous images, I knew I had to share them anyway! The yummy sunlight. The casual feel. I love how each and every photo feels like it expresses the actual personalities of the couple. Warm nature. Fun-loving spirits. And, their love story is even cuter. In Jeff's words:

It's an interesting story, they grew up together but never really talked much. Aubrie went off on a missions trip to Australia and Aaron started to chat with her over instant messenger and email. When she returned, they started dating. It's interesting that it took her going half way around the world to marry the man that lived down the street.

So sweet! Of course, adding to that - the fact that it was forty degrees this morning made these images all that much more delicious.

The Result

After four years of waiting, much impatience, and lots and lots of sweating, I'm thrilled, excited, and ecstatic to announce that we finally finally have a destination: Philadelphia.

In six weeks we'll pack our bags and move across the country, and I couldn't be more excited to have Philadelphia be the new place to call home. With so many talented wedding professionals, Philly is big, but not too big. It's buzzing, but not too busy. It's loud, but not too noisy. It is, in essence, perfect.

Mostly though, I am so excited about familiarizing myself with and falling in love with the Philly wedding market. I already knew of the extremely talented Philadelphia companies Little Pink Book Events, Queen of Hearts Wedding Consultants, and Jubilee Photography. And, if they are any indication of the general wedding industry in Philadelphia, well, then let's just say that the wedding market there must be quite unreal in terms of talent. And, quite honestly, I simply cannot wait to meet them all!

So, if you've been wondering where I have been lately, hopefully this provides some insight. But, packing, moving, cleaning, planning, aren't even the beginning of all that I've been working on. The something-up-my-sleeve really is coming soon, and as I'll soon share, turns out is really multiple things. Things I am so excited about it's killing me to keep them to myself!

Anyway, do you have any tips on Philadelphia? Anyone I must meet? Things I must see? I'm so looking forward to it that I just want to do it all.

Over the past few months I have realized that one question that seems to come up a lot in wedding planning is the ever dreaded topic: insurance. But, if you really think about it, it makes total sense. We have insurance for our cars. Our health. Our homes. Sometimes even our pets. So, when spending thousands of dollars on a one-day affair, why in the world wouldn't you have insurance for that as well?

So today, I bring the repost "Wed-surance" - from days long, long ago when this blog was still a baby and my readers were most certainly in the single digits.

Wedding insurance is one of those wedding essentials that is often...wait, let me rephrase that...almost always overlooked. When typical weddings mean you are squeezing every penny out of each dollar you spend, insurance is just not one of those things that you think about. It seems like an easy way to cut costs, right?

Well, what if a hurricane comes on your wedding weekend (as is apt to happen here in Florida)? Or what if a family member gets deathly ill just before? Do you attempt to hold the wedding anyway? If a natural disaster occurs in your area in a close proximity to the date (or something equally as awful), you face losing all or most of your money. How horrifying is that!

So, in my opinion, wedding insurance should not be overlooked. Plus, some companies are even beginning to offer "change of heart" coverage just in case you or your schmookums get cold feet. You should think about it like car insurance (especially since today's average wedding costs more than a lot of cars!) - you wouldn't risk something happening by stupidly not having insurance, would you? Plan for it, budget it in, even if it means you have to cut elsewhere -you'd rather be safe than sorry.

Seating Like No Other

You know, I think seating charts have an lot of untapped potential. There. I said it. There are so many creative things you can do with your wedding and I think many brides find some escort cards and are done with it. Not that there is anything wrong with that of course (I'm guilty as charged!), but I just think that this is one of those often overlooked details that has the potential to really get your guests talking.

Case in point: I was reading the Tammy Golson Events blog the other day (do you read it? Because if you don't then you really, really should!) and stumbled upon these babies by the amazing Melangerie.

Are you confused? Without seeing it in person I was too at first. But Melangerie explains it as a "vintage constellation map":

Guests are organized in a list format by their relationship to the bride and groom. Guest's astrological signs are included as an extra level of detail, and relationship "constellations" are mapped out on the corresponding milky way graphic. All information and colors are customizable.

Fell in love with this beautiful wedding coordinated Madeline Chapman of Madeline's Weddings & Events from Winnipeg. With a Greek background myself, I suppose it is only natural that I fell immediately in love with the Greek details and cultural inspiration. I also love the strong, vibrant colors - red and orange - set as soft details like the candy buffet and the menu design. And the fact that the carpet matches all the colors and decor? Well, let's just say they get major bonus points for that. Wow.

Have you ever had those days where all you need is a kick of encouragement? Well, Saturday was one of those mornings for me, and lo and behold, my horoscope for the day:

Inspiration is the keyword for the day. You may be feeling highly motivated to move on with what others may consider impossible dreams and turn them into reality. Do not let anything stop you. Engagement Love: A Tuba + Some Balloons

I think it's safe to say that most SWOONOVERIT readers are aware of how I feel of themed engagement shoots, especially if they involve props of some kind. In a weird way, I think this has prompted more submissions of shoots that fit this type. And, I have to admit, I love it.

So, when Jenn from Book End Media sent over these images by Dove Wedding Photography, featuring not only my beloved balloons, but even their cute pup and a big 'ole tuba, well, it was really no question as to whether it was suitable for the blog.

So, I've been mulling around some business and blog decisions and realized, what better way to make a decision than to get the input of you, my dear wonderful readers? You see, I am pretty bad, quite awful actually, about keeping up with my Google Reader. And so sometimes blogs move addresses and it takes a long, long time before I even notice. Then even longer for me to change it and start reading again. [See, I told you I was bad.]

What about you? Are you bad about resubscribing to blogs after they move? Would you keep up with SWOONOVERIT if it just so happened to change addresses [I think it's time people stop calling this The Blissful Bride - don't you?]. This may be a hint to one of the big things coming for SWOONOVERIT. Or maybe not. You never know.

Anyway, I've added a poll in the top left sidebar of this blog and I would appreciate it oh so very much if you'd either participate there or leave a comment here with your thoughts on this. Even if your thoughts are "wow, Amanda, a poll on subscribing to blogs - what a lame idea." And if you leave no feedback at all then I'll just assume that that was what you must have been thinking.

Seriously. Any input appreciated.

Facing Uncertainty

This post has been a long time coming. Way back in November, I vouched to be the type of blog writer that would tell you not just about all the things I love, but also the things I do. Who I am. I promised to start putting myself out there a little more. And, dear Internet, that is exactly what I intend to do. Let me begin by saying, there are oh so many things that you do not know about me. Jemma suggested back on the original post that I tell you more about Breakfast Tuesdays, and I will [oh will I!]. But, well, I'll save that for a more random entry. Today I have a purpose.

All my life I have hated surprises. I loved them in and of themselves, but I have always hated the anticipation. The angst leading up to them. And so forth. I'm known in my family for opening gifts early and rushing things just to get them over with [sad, I know].

But, in two and a half months my husband, my dog, and I will pack up and move across the country. The catch? We have no idea where we are moving. We won't, in fact, know until about six weeks before the move. It all has to do with my husband and the matching system he's placed into, so we have a little bit of say, but not much. Can you imagine, dear friends, what this has done to me? Initially, I think I was so bewildered by it all that I would complain to anyone that would listen. Let's be clear here: I'm excited, thrilled even, at the idea of moving - it's the not-knowing-where and the not-knowing-until-right-before-we-go parts that kill me.

But now? I have gotten so used to the idea that - and I'm being totally honest here - I think it's kind of fun. I mean, we don't have to choose. We will just go wherever we're told. Wherever we land, it will be an adventure. But most importantly? We'll be together.

Of course it doesn't hurt that the prospects aren't so bad either.

But, coping with this uncertainty I truly feel has made me a stronger person. Sure, it might sound silly. But in two weeks I will begin cleaning and packing our house for a destination unknown. And, I can't wait.

If you've made it this far you most certainly deserve a prize. So, I give you my precious furbaby Kira. She is, without a doubt, the love of my life [along with my husband, of course].

Helloooo Turquoise

Ever since Pantone announced the color of the year for 2010, I've been mesmerized by it: turquoise. It's so versatile. So lovely. Turquoise can be paired with neutral browns for a soft, warm palette. Or it can be combined with a deep burgundy or strong black for an intense pop of color and dramatic flair. The fabulous Jemma Coleman of Jemma Coleman Photography even pairs it with yellow for a fun, flirty palette.

Then, when I start thinking back on it, I realize that a great majority of the inspiration boards I have made have at some point in time have featured some shade of turquoise over the years. So, perhaps it is no wonder that I am so fascinated with it as the color of the year this year.

With that, I can't resist sharing some these that I've made over the years featuring this beautiful color. They range as far back as the first month of this birth of this blog itself - back when it was known as The Blissful Bride. I think you'll see my inspiration board style has greatly changed over time. The color, however, remains just as lovely as ever.

The Oxymoron: Cute Camera Bag

So, I know I'm not the only crazy who likes to tote around a DSLR on a regular basis. [As a sidenote, if you have no clue what I just said, you can probably ignore the rest of this post.] So my dilemma has always been either not having a purse large enough to put my camera in with it or not trusting my purse's contents not to scratch my camera to pieces.

And, carrying a camera bag separately when you are, say, going out to dinner with your friends just screams loser. Though I should probably say here that I have been guilty of it on more occasions than I would like to admit.

Regardless, when I received an e-mail about Epiphanie, well, I was so excited I could almost squeal! The bags aren't being released until February, but check it out - they look like purses. They feel like purses. They act like purses. But they have special compartments, padding, and protection for all your photo-loving gear!

Perfection? I would say so. I can promise you this - that red one will be mine as quicker that I can whip out the credit card. Okay. Well, maybe not that quickly. But, you know what I mean.

Making Me Blush

I honestly have no idea which of my clients wrote this - I had no idea that they did so, but had noticed some clicks coming from it over on Project Wedding and went to investigate. When I realized it was a review, my nerves welled up inside of me...

I used Swoon Over It to address my invitations. The different calligraphy styles they offer are gorgeous and a nice change from the other options I found online. I used their "Paris" style and have gotten tons of compliments. Amanda was amazing to work with (she even emailed me a photo of the first envelope to make sure I liked the way it looked!), and they were SIGNIFICANTLY less expensive than any other calligrapher I could find. If you're considering using a calligrapher, try them out - quick, before they realize they could double their price and still have no trouble getting business! :)

Ummm wow. I am, literally, speechless. Have I mentioned lately that I am blessed with, honestly, the best clients ever? I have no clue who this was, but they left a review that couldn't have been nicer. Honestly, made my week. No - my month. It's so nice to know that all your stressing, hard work, and love poured into your work does not go unnoticed.

Wishing Has Never Been So Easy

This is not the first time I have brought it up, but with Christmas still afresh a recent conversation came to mind. I was talking amongst friends when one brought up how she wished everyone would just make lists of what they actually want so she can buy people things they like without worry. Our discussion was mainly rooted in the stress of the season. How so many people spend so much time trying to find just the right thing for everyone on their list, that if we could just eliminate that maybe people could spend more time enjoying the season itself and being with one another.

She made a good point. Her next thought was to campaign to at least her family members for considering starting Amazon wishlists for next year. Or convince them to start one now and just keep it updated all year for birthdays, anniversaries, etc.

This is where I all but jumped at the opportunity to tell her about Wishpot. And, though many of you have heard of it - and use it! - I am quite certain that there are several of you out there that haven't.

Wishpot is a wishlist maker that lets you create not just one but several lists to track all your various types of wants and needs as well as recommendations ("pick lists") for others. Your Destiny

Last October, I was lucky enough to get to listen to Dr. Bruce Bickel discuss character-based leadership - how to find it, how to develop it, and how to recognize it. One of the points that he made on effective leadership was something that has stuck with me and continues to stick with me. And, given its relevance to recent times, I felt it appropriate to share with you all. Before you run off, I promise this is wedding-related - mostly.

You see, in life we often make promises to ourselves. Set goals. Seek results. The coming of a new year is the most well-known time for such goodness. Brides too, are some of the most guilty of these actions. We mean well - we really do. But, when push comes to shove, it is 9 times out of 10 that those resolutions get pushed aside. Work gets in the way. Or illness. Or school. Or some other time constraint. By March we have all but forgotten what we set out to do.

Bickel's breakdown is something that I think is important. You must stop and remind yourself that goals don't happen overnight. So, next time you eat a twinkie, don't throw your hands up and say that all is lost - just remind yourself that with every one step back you can take two steps forward. Take a deep breath, and think of this:

thoughts become your words

words become your actions

actions become your habits

habits become your character

character becomes your destiny

You, my friend, are in charge of your destiny. And, it all begins with the way you think of it. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise.

At SWOONOVERIT, we are lucky to see so many lovely envelopes come in and out of our doors. But every now and again, we're lucky enough to be involved with a gorgeous invitation or two as well.

Lately, we have been wearing our little fingers thin and pens dry on these adorable baby shower invites and could not resist sharing a peek of them.

Honestly, now I'm itching to paint a whole room that cheery chartreuse color. You would think I would be sick of it from staring at so many of these, but instead I am just all that much more in love. I blame it all on that adorable little lion. He could certainly inspire a whole baby shower theme - that's for sure.

Then, we were recently asked to draw up some "Mr." and "Mrs." signs for Latrice Cushenberry of Bridal Opulence.

A Little Love

Today I was greeted by two surprising and lovely mentions in the blog world. First, there was making the well-known 2010 BrideTide listing of "Top 100 Blogs and Twitters to Follow."

I was honored to make the list last year, but quite stunned to make it again this year. Thank you thank you thank you, BrideTide! As you might notice, I did not waste any time in adding the badge to my list of accolades.

Then, one of my favorite blogs Gator Bride, said in a recent post that SWOONOVERIT maps were her favorite source of inspiration for creating maps for her wedding.

Given her incredible design sense and amazing style, I was, without a doubt, honored! Thank you Miss Gator! If you haven't checked out Gator Bride before, you most definitely need to take a peek. You won't be disappointed!

How I've missed you! I feel so sorry for you and all the neglect and abuse you have endured these past few weeks. Undeniably, I've been a bad parent. Not only have I completely ignored you, I have failed to even think about you.

While I have been out galavanting with family and friends, including sledding on cardboard boxes, you have been simply sitting here - unattended. Please do not misunderstand, however, all was not play. I have been working hard on my secret project (details coming eventually!), but that is no excuse to leave you high and dry.

So, dear faithful blog, please accept my deepest apologies. You did not deserve this neglect, and will not receive it again. After all, I do indeed have great plans for you. Thanks for your patience, oh wonderful child of mine.

And, within an instant, I fell in love with long blonde hair, tall grassy pastures, and desert skies. Winter Adventure

My deepest apologies for my absence this last week. I was, in fact, on a bit of a winter adventure through the streets of New York City. And, while it did not snow like I'd hoped (yes, a Floridian visiting the North in the winter inevitably wishes for snow), it was certainly an adventure.

I am lucky enough that I get to go quite frequently. So, visiting anything in particular is usually out of the question. We just go as we please and do as we please. We visited the famous Natural History Museum. Saw the beautiful Rockefeller Tree in all its glory. We played at Dave and Buster's. We got nutella-and-banana crepes - which I promptly spilled down the front of me. We explored Times Square. And, we enjoyed the coziness of a tiny Soho apartment. But most of all, we laughed, we explored, and we loved. New York City has never failed me. Ever.

So today, as I sit in La Guardia Airport on my way home, I will leave you with some of my favorite city-inspired boards and city-inspired photos celebrating love.

There are so many things I want to say about the fabulous Aletha and her beautiful Pearls Events blog, but I truly just have no clue where to begin. The blog is clean and beautifully designed. The posts are thorough and well written. The images are hand-selected.

Aletha's blog is great for the newcomer just getting into weddings, for the photo junkie who just likes to get their fill, and for the wedding industry expert looking to stay up in the field. Aletha, keep up the amazing work - even in my Google Reader full of tons of inspiring blogs, yours always stays on the top. I know that I can never get enough.

There will be no post today because I was, I will confess, at the 12:40AM showing of New Moon. And I was, I will confess some more, donning my "Team Edward" shirt, Ray Bans, and squealing like a little girl. Yes, I might have been mistaken for a thirteen-year-old. But, it's the one night a year I have a good excuse for it. Plus, it's not like I am alone in this ridiculousness.

And, just to make this wedding-related, did you know that if you Google Image search "Edward Bella wedding" you will find a slew of gorgeous photoshopped images fans have created imagining their wedding? Not to worry, I wasn't the ridiculously crazed person who discovered this.

For Boys: The Wedding Gift

Why are boys impossible to buy for? I mean, video games? Sure. Clothes? They'll take it. But what do they really want? And, for a wedding gift no less. It should be something they love and treasure. Something meaningful. Something special. Something they can keep forever.

So, when I saw what this bride did, I was, well, quite impressed. Her husband was an avid reader and collector of comic books. So, for the big day she had one custom-made to reflect the occasion. How amazing is that!? He looks like one happy groom, that's for sure.

Defeated

I love making lists. Setting goals. Better yet, achieving goals. In fact, I've been known to set ridiculous goals for myself just to test my limits. Because, after all, if you aren't testing your own limits who is going to do it for you?

Last January (2009), I ran the Disney Half Marathon for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society in honor of my very best friend (and former maid of honor!) in the whole, wide world. The race was challenging, uplifting, encouraging, strengthening, inspiring. I had grand hopes to run another half this February (2010) and though I trained a bit here and there, as time creeps closer and closer I realized that perhaps now is just not the time for me. I was stressed about running. When am I going to have time? Am I going to be trained enough? How am I going to train in January when I will be even busier? What am I going to let go of to make this happen?

Then I realized, why? Running, racing in particular, shouldn't be something to stress over. Sure, exercise is good. But running is a challenge. One that, if you can't enjoy it, there's no point in taking it on. Once you start training long distances you're running one maybe even two hours every weekend. If running makes you feel guilty because there are so many other things you should be doing then what is the point?

So, I'm admitting defeat. Something else I have gotten good at. That is, not because I'm a quitter, but because I set so many high goals for myself that sometimes you just have to learn to accept that they will not all be attainable with sanity intact. Alas, dear Five Points of Life, we will not meet this year. I will, however, set my sights high on some inner-city races after our big move in the Spring (have I mentioned we're moving!?).

Until then, it's Jillian Michaels for me. Have you had the Jillian Michaels experience [also known as the 30-Day-Shred]? Twenty minutes and she will kick. your. butt. I promise. It's not for the weak-kneed or faint-of-heart.

Honesty

As I sit here and write this post, I'm inspired by so many things. I realized recently that some of my favorite blogs are not simply blogging about things, but also blogging about life.

In business, they say that we invest in the people that make up companies not the companies themselves. As cheesy as it may sound, I think that blogs and our investment in reading them and following them are kind of the same. I know personally I am far more interested and entertained by blogs where I feel like I know the writer. Blogs that yes, blog about weddings, but also blog about what they did this weekend, what they're doing next week. And how they feel about what's going on in the world.

This leads me to beg the question: what could you ever want to know about me? As a blogger? As a wedding professional? As a writer? Do you want to know about me? I am opening the door now and leaving it open. While I have no intention of blasting my personal life all over the internet, I love the idea of documenting a journey through life and not just documenting all the beautiful things I have found within it.

That Wedding

You know, when you work in weddings and see weddings, you have the risk of being burned out. We work at a lot of the same venues. See a lot of the same colors (hellooooo orange and blue!). And, work with a lot of the same vendors.

So, you walk carefully on the edge of every wedding beginning to feel the same. But then you work weddings like Karen and Jonathan's like we had on Saturday. That wedding that makes your love for weddings come alive. That wedding where every aspect was labored over with love down to each minute detail. It killed me I didn't get a chance to snap more or better (we were in a super rush) photos, but I did catch a couple detail shots before the evening got rolling that I couldn't resist sharing.

This was the snack bar entitled "Groom's Favorite Snacks."

Jars were filled with oatmeal raisin cookies, chocolate almond biscottis, and coconut cookies.

On the right side of the table was a jar labeled "Roscoe's Favorite Snack" - Roscoe is their beloved dog.

And, beside that were "doggie bags" so you can take them home to your pup.

This idea was, of course, adorable, until guests started eating them by accident. I'm not really sure how or why - they were in the shape of dog bones...

And, the gorgeous guestbook. This page is of Roscoe, but they had a whole book full of beautiful photos of them. This photo-guestbook idea is used frequently, but I've never seen one with so many details on each page. The book told the story of their relationship. It was truly beautiful.

And oh this was only the beginning. I cannot wait to see the photos from the wonderful Jimmy Ho Photography of all their details and beautiful decor. Truly a fabulous night.

It's probably no surprise that I have been itching to do a board in SWOONOVERIT colors: clean gray and white. And, I have been holding this one back for a while because no matter how much I play with it things never feel quite right. I'm afraid this is as close as it's going to get.

Couples Research

I recently received a very nice e-mail from Cristina, a Doctoral Student at the University of Virginia. She is conducting a web-based study of engaged couples and, if you are engaged, needs your help. The following is the information regarding her research. Please help her out if you can.

Engaged volunteers needed!

I am looking for volunteers for a study of attitudes towards marriage and parenthood among engaged couples. The study consists of a 25-30 minute online survey. To qualify for the study, you must be 20-35 years old, live in the U.S., and plan to marry or have a commitment ceremony within the next 365 days. You and your romantic partner must not have children, and this must be the first marriage for both of you.

You can:

-Help a doctoral candidate;
-Increase the pool of scientific knowledge;
-Support research on marriage and families; and
-Spend some time thinking about your relationship!

I am working with Dr. Charlotte J. Patterson, a Professor of Psychology at the University of Virginia. This study has been approved by the University of Virginia Institutional Review Board #2009025800.

Run in Color

I have to say, I feel like the colored aisle runner has definitely come alive as a trend. But, back when I was planning my wedding I remember I was looked at sideways a few times when I mentioned it. Truly, colored runners really depend on your location. Does your venue need color brought into the area? Will it make the aisle pop?

More importantly: Is a runner at all appropriate? This is critical - brides should be advised on the dangers of using runners in areas that aren't suitable for them [a topic for a whole other post]. Also, will the color stain [the bride's white dress, for example]? Will you be able to see through it? Is it going to slip and slide on the flooring below? If so, make sure that the bottom is lined to prevent this from happening.

But, done right, colored and patterned runners can certainly have a wow effect.

Weddings We Love: Amber and Sterling

This one is particularly special to me because they were my clients who were kind enough to send me a link to some photos of their day. I love being able to see a client's wedding and how my work fit in with the look and feel. And, Amber and Sterling are so photogenic, and their photographer Freed was so fantastic, that the photos are truly stunning.

Plus, they have adorable details. So, I knew immediately I would simply have to share their wedding with you all.

The Ultimate DIY

A few weeks ago, I linked to a post about designing your own Nina shoes. Recently, someone brought to light the fabulous Shoes of Prey - a custom shoe design store.

What I love about Shoes of Prey? You don't have to pick out a starter shoe to customize. You start with just a plain shoe no matter what and then customize each section - toes, backs, decorations, heels, and heel height [as well as color of each] entirely to your liking.

Weddings We Love: Ryan and Rochelle

So, I first intrigued you long ago with Ryan and Rochelle's fabulous green and gold vintagey wedding. Well, the professional photos from the incredibly talented Ashley McCormick have come in and, to no one's surprise, they are goooorg-eous. Of course, it didn't hurt that she had such a stunning bride and groom to work with.

Anyway, I could not resist sharing them with you for a little eye candy to start your week. Here are some of my favorites.

Yea, that's right. I said it: spooky elegance. I was decorating for Halloween this week - yes I know I'm quite late - and could not resist a board full of shades of orange popping off of a black contrast.

I love the idea of dressing all the bridesmaids in black and having them carry bright orange bouquets. I am quite convinced even if you did not want your wedding to have a spooky vibe, that the colors could be carried off quite beautifully together.

Mission in the Kitchen: Witch's Fingers

Recently I have been looking for ways to diversify the blog. While I have no intention to break away from weddings, I thought it might be fun to spice things up a bit.

So, dear readers, let me introduce you to our newest series: Mission in the Kitchen.

For our inaugural post I could not resist sharing with you one of my favorite Halloween goodies: witch's fingers. These yummies are essentially sugar cookies, but delicately shaped for just the right amount of creepy. Personally, when I make them, they are much wider and squishy looking so as to look less real. But, if you're going for creepy then it most certainly can be achieved with these.

1 cup butter, softened

1 cup powdered sugar

1 egg

1 teaspoon almond extract

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

2 2/3 cups all-purpose flour

1 teaspoon baking powder

1 teaspoon salt

3/4 cup whole or large sliced almonds

1 tube red decorating gel

1. Combine the butter, sugar, egg, almond extract, and vanilla extract in a mixing bowl. Beat together with an electric mixer; gradually add the flour, baking powder, and salt, continually beating; refrigerate 20 to 30 minutes.

2. Preheat oven to 325 degrees F (165 degrees C). Lightly grease baking sheets.

3.  Remove dough from refrigerator in small amounts. Place 1 large teaspoon at a time onto a piece of waxed paper. Use the waxed paper to roll the dough into a thin finger-shaped cookie. Press one almond into one end of each cookie to give the appearance of a long fingernail. Squeeze cookie near the tip and again near the center of each to give the impression of knuckles. You can also cut into the dough with a sharp knife at the same points to help give a more finger-like appearance. Arrange the shaped cookies on the baking sheets.

4. Bake in the preheated oven until the cookies are slightly golden in color, 20 to 25 minutes.

5. Remove the almond from the end of each cookie; squeeze a small amount of red decorating gel into the cavity; replace the almond to cause the gel to ooze out around the tip of the cookie. If you don’t want the cookies to look scary, you can also use the gel to make the nails red on the top.
