Around the Studio: July Edition

Another glimpse into our projects as of late. With June and July being prime wedding season, business has boomed at SWOONOVERIT these past few weeks. Honestly, we could not be more flattered. So, it is with extreme disappointment to say that we've been simply awful about taking photos. We only have a couple of some of the beautiful envelopes that have gone in and out of our door, but here they are...

Look at this yummy gold ink on red envelopes.
I actually do have better photos of these where I don't have to clip out the address, but don't have them uploaded. Still, it's gorgeous, no?

At the same time, there is always something about the simple black on white that I love.
As you can tell, London font is by far the most popular of our selection.

One of my wonderful clients, Danielle, was sweet enough to even send along a sample of her beautiful invitation. As a side note, I really must say that we love it when clients do this.

Obviously names and dates have been blurred for identity reasons, but it is beautiful nonetheless, no? I love the simple, modern design and that the lettering is so clean. Truly stunning.

And, after receiving her envelopes, Danielle sent me this:
Absolutely beautiful!  I just got home to find my box waiting with my doorman...my fiance and I were so excited to open the box and find the most gorgeous envelopes!  I just looked at the first couple and had to write to tell you how excited we are.  Thank you so much for helping to make our wedding invites extra special for our guests...we love them!!!!!
Have I mentioned we love our clients? Danielle, you are so welcome. Thank you for trusting us with your beautiful envelopes and for being such a joy to work with!

Ultimate List

I was just about beside myself earlier when Melissa brought me these...

Designer Erin Vale has created and posted some free lists to help you stay organized. And, with their gorgeous design and funny titles I fell head over heels. I like too that the Freakin Never Ending To Do List lets you circle what date you want to get it done.

Since there is a little bit of a listmaker in all of us, I could not resist the re-post. Download the Freakin Never Ending To Do List, the Blog Topics to Post List, or the Pain in the Groceries to Buy List

...and enjoy!

The Wedding Tree

Fell upon this lovely idea on C is for Charmed and could not resist posting it. I mean, what do you really do with a guestbook after it's all over anyway? But this? This is artwork. A keepsake for sure.

Images by Jonas Peterson.

Do you have another really original guestbook idea? One that trumps this? We would love to hear them.

Blog of the Week: Hostess with the Mostess

Blog of the Week: Hostess with the Mostess

I bring up Hostess with the Mostess (HWTM) because many brides don't think of looking beyond strictly wedding and photography blogs and HWTM is a good example of why you should. Writer Jen Sbranti has so many fabulous decorating and decor ideas and she has created a fabulous blog to showcase these talents. The blog is one that will help you not only with decor for your reception, but your rehearsal dinner, your bridal showers, your other parties. I have a feeling you will be following this blog loooong after your wedding.

And, the fact that each of her entries are accompanied by gorgeous, vibrant photos and fabulous designs, well, it certainly doesn't hurt.

Do you have a favorite "non-wedding" blog?

Inspiration: Peacock

So, my brother is getting married next year and my fabulous to-be sister-in-law is very artistic and, I think, almost as into weddings as I am. Well, maybe not weddings in general for her. But I digress.

The point? They are planning a peacock-inspired wedding and I could not be more excited! Naturally, I had to make them a board. Seriously, how fun are these colors? So bright and vibrant!

What do you think?

Everybody Needs a Little Help

We have all seen the tabloids do it with celebrities: "CAUGHT IN THE ACT: [INSERT FAMOUS ACTRESS NAME HERE] WITHOUT MAKEUP." The horror! How dare they go out without makeup!?

No, but seriously, I came across these before and after shots of brides (read: real people) over on Unique Scoop and I thought it was a pleasant reminder of two things: (1) We all need [and it is okay to need] a little help in the beauty department on the biggest day of your life; (2) You should probably hire a professional to take care of this for such an important event [though that is a topic for a whole other post].

For more explanation and to see a ton more before and afters head on over to Unique Scoop's post here.

The Worst Case Scenario Survival Handbook: Weddings

So, I was pretty tickled to find this post from Chronicle Books about "How to Trim the Guest List." It contains an excerpt from one of my favorite wedding-related reads -- one which I had nearly forgotten about -- The Worst Case Scenario Survival Handbook: Weddings. Whether you are a bride, a planner, a wedding vendor, or heck, just someone really into weddings, you must see this book.
It includes things like... "What to Do If You are Hit in the Eye with a Bouquet"  "How to Find the Groom" "How to Revive Your Spouse" and, my personal favorite, "How to Survive if the Bride's Gown is Lost." If the titles made you giggle you can only imagine what the book itself will do. Seriously, if you do not already have a copy of this bad boy, I highly recommend that you pick one up

Do you have a favorite wedding-related read? If so, tell us all about it; we're always looking for new favorites.

Blog of the Week: Diagnosis Deferred

Blog of the Week: Diagnosis Deferred

Let me first admit this: when I sat down to write this post I had no clue who I thought should be "blog of the week." So, I opened up my Google Reader and, lo and behold, there it was. Close to the top of the list: Diagnosis Deferred. A blog that I can proudly say that I have been reading pretty much since it's beginning.

Written by author Teresa, who is a self-professed New York-loving, candy-obsessed, balloon-infatuated, indecisive bride who has me cracking up every time I read her blog. Maybe it is because I think we have so much in common. Maybe it is because I wish I were half as funny as she is. But I do know this: it's definitely because she writes a fascinating blog and is planning a fabulous silhouette-inspired wedding. Honestly, every post she writes oozes of personality and sharp wit. By far, one of my favorite blogs to read.

Some of my favorite posts have been Making Sacrifices, Mr. Diagnosis Deferred, and A Tiger Behind the Wheel. Honestly, check it out. I promise she'll make you laugh and, if you're lucky, might even continue to share her wonderful wedding planning details with us.

Enjoy!

Giveaway: Dance Me, Daddy

Figuring out what to give my dad on the day of my wedding was one of the hardest wedding-related decisions I had to make. I wish I was kidding. I mean, what do you give a guy that will be sweet and meaningful on a day that will be undoubtedly difficult for him (no matter how happy he is for you)?

Well, I might just have a perfect idea for you. How about the book Dance Me, Daddy by Cindy Morgan? Based on the perfect "Father-Daughter Dance" song "King of the World" by Point of Grace, this book tells the beautiful story of the relationship between a little girl and her father. With it's glossy pages and gorgeous illustrations the book would be the perfect gift for your father on your wedding day.

And, as such, it seems only appropriate that I share a few of these with you dear readers. So, I am thrilled to announce that I will be giving away three copies of this stunning hardcover book.

All you have to do is comment on this post and tell me why you think it would be perfect for your father (or whomever you plan to give it to) before July 31, 2009 at 11:59 EST. Winners will be randomly selected the following week.

Best of luck!

P.S. How amazing is that Plaza Grand Ballroom? Seriously breathtaking. I think I'm in love.

Double Take

A lot of brides change dresses for the reception or mid-reception. But, what about changing your whole look? Especially if you could do it in a couple minutes. Seriously, that's what a bride from a former wedding I worked on did and she had people turning heads all night long. Not one fabulous appearance...but two.

So her first look was stunningly romantic. Her hair was long and curled. Her makeup was soft and sweet. Her dress was flowing and just gorgeous.

Her second look? Bold. Hollywood-esque. She pulled her hair back in a ponytail (you would have never guessed...it looked like an updo) and wore a stunning headpiece (with feathers to tie into her white feather theme throughout). She changed into a satin strapless number and threw on some red lipstick and looked, well, incredible. But, a very dramatic kind of incredible.

A look something like this but with the hair back.

So, brides, what about you? Do you or did you have any tricks up your sleeve?

Road to Bliss: The Mishaps

It's true. I have promised to tell the tale of the mishaps from my wedding with you all a few times. But, now, more than a year later and at the urging (dare I say nagging?) of some of my friends and family, I think I am finally ready to unleash the beast. Here is the longest post I have ever (and probably will ever) post on this blog:

My wedding was far from perfect. As a sidenote, you all should know that what went wrong was completely and entirely out of the hands of my wedding planner. But, if you watched the "Day in the Life" video I posted a couple weeks ago you know that things we far from ideal...

First there was the chair situation. Rental company for extra chairs for the ceremony is spontaneously closed when Melissa goes to pick them up. Thankfully, Melissa was quick on her feet and had already secured new chairs (albeit not as pretty) from the hotel where my family was staying.

Then there was the DJ. He was given explicit instructions to stick to the playlist we gave him (we not only provided the playlist but also all the songs on CDs for him so there would be no confusion). Yet still we had to ask him twice to stop deviating from the playlist. At some point during dinner my Mom went up and asked if he would turn down the music a little (unbeknown to me). He turns it down so low no one can hear it. Greg and I ask Melissa to ask if he will turn it up a little bit. He turns it up so loud we cannot hear each other anymore. Passive aggressive much?

Now onto the decor... we'll start with the bouquets. You see those (below)? The color they are in this image is only after rounds of the florist painting and re-painting them. When they showed up, they were HOT PINK. Hot pink is beautiful but not so much with my burgundy and coral wedding scheme. Thankfully I had a wedding planner there to get this matter set straight.

And the lovely boutonnieres (see below). Ohhh this one makes me mad.

This CHERRY RED image you see below was supposed to be ohhh about the color of the tie that the groomsmen was wearing. In my opinion, here is where there is no excuse. Sure with the bridesmaid bouquets above maybe the peonies arrived in the wrong color (that happens sometimes).

But here? The roses that were to be ordered were black baccara (which is a deep burgundy color naturally). So the only explanation is that the florist ordered the wrong color. And, when he was sent swatches of my colors MONTHS before my wedding and confirmed that all the colors were corrected the two weeks prior for our confirmation meeting there is NO EXCUSE.

Below is a photo of the tables at my wedding. A red napkin on a red tablecloth tied with a raffia wrap of some kind. To me, I would say that is not at all like a burgundy tablecloth with a burgundy napkin and a coral-colored ribbon, would you? Yeah, I didn't think so.

Here is where you can see again the lovely hot pink peonies (which were not sprayed, in this case) and cherry red roses. The vase was supposed to have floating pearls in it (Do you see pearls? I don't... just bubbles.). In fact, I think the only thing even close to "right" here is the hydrangea. Oh, and the candle.

And the chair covers... more lovely red to add to my burgundy and coral palette. The sashes that were tied on them were also supposed to be coral colored.

This of course is not even mentioning that we were short one corsage so my poor mother had to go without one. Or the fact that the corsages were supposed to be wrist corsages and they showed up as magnets.

The worst part? The florist was my "splurge." I went way out of my budget to afford the florist in town that is touted as being "the best." He is said to be able to do amazing things and I had faith that my wedding would be no exception. Instead, I spent one fifth of my wedding budget on details that were wrong in ALMOST EVERY WAY. In fact, the only thing that was right was my bouquet. That was it. And, what an awful feeling to see the bouquets and boutonnieres for the first time and almost start crying. Or walk into your reception with the thought "wow, this is all very wrong."

I wish I had a happy ending for you. Like ohhh say, that the florist admitted he was wrong (which he did) and gave me a large portion of my money back (as he should have). But, unfortunately, I do not. Instead, I have a very important lesson for you: You CANNOT trust a wedding vendor on reputation alone. Ask for references. Talk to past clients. Do your homework. I hired an established, well-known wedding vendor with a good reputation and I still ended up screwed. Do not let it happen to you.

But the ultimate moral of the story? Take a deep breath, and move on. I did not spend a second crying in the bathroom at my wedding reception despite the fact it was all wrong. In fact, the photos of my first dance with my new husband are all smiling. Because, in the end, you have to let go. At the end of the day I still married the man of my dreams, even if the flowers involved were all the wrong color. So, do not let this tale worry you because on your wedding day, should something go awry just remember to breathe in, breathe out, and let it go. The important part is that you still get to get married.

On the News

That's right. SWOONOVERIT has now officially been on the news. The lovely Saundra Hadley of Planning...Forever Events was kind enough to show our work on her weekly news segment with FOX. To say we were just excited would be an understatement.

Be sure to check it out here

And Saundra, thank you so much for the mention. We are honored, flattered, and quite honestly stunned. Thank you thank you thank you!

From the great response I always get when I do these, I figured another giveaway roundup never hurts. And, with some of the fabulous giveaways going on in the blog world right now, I didn't think that you all would mind.

First and foremost, my friends over at Unique Designs are celebrating the launch of their new website (and fabulous new blog) and to do so they are hosting a myriad of giveaways. Congrats Unique Designs on a beautiful launch! I look forward to working with you and watching your company continue to flourish!

Also, you know that my love of paper goods could not keep me from mentioning that Blush Paperie is giving away 100 placecards to celebrate their new line. Go here for more details and to enter.

And last but not least, April Foster Events is giving away Philosophy Gel and Bubble Bath (if you have ever used this, you know that you do not want to miss this freebie!) to two lucky readers. Enter here.

Best of luck and happy entering!

P.S. We might just be hosting our very own little giveaway again soon. Be sure to check back on Friday.

Inspiration: Orange Citrus

Did you see the board I made for the MasterPiece Weddings Fruit Inspiration Week? Orange citrus...

Very summery and Florida-esque, no?
(See here for sources.)

Be sure to check out the rest of the MasterPiece Weddings fruit-based inspiration boards from this past week... lemon, strawberry, green apple, and my very favorite, blueberry. So fun!
